Come And See
Come and see, the jarring scene at His nativity:
The timeless God enters our history
Just a baby in the straw!
Oh can it be, the King of kings would shun His majesty
And choose a cowshed for a home,
A manger for a throne?
Yet angels saw the wonder, and they sang His glory,
Shepherds heard and understood the story,
Wise men came and knew His fame
Come and see a filthy stable housing royalty,
Unbounded wealth swaddled in poverty,
Just the godhead in the straw!
Oh can it be that heaven’s King would waive the pageantry?
That Sovereign God would trade it all
For a cattle stall?
Yet gold could never add a thing to Jesus’ greatness.
Straw and hay could never dull His radiance.
Our God has come! His light will shine
Angels saw the wonder, so do I!
Shepherds heard the news and now we tell
The story of our God Emmanuel!
Wise men paid their homage, so do we,
Offering our hearts that we might see
His light in us this Christmas.
Come and see a loving mother thinking “Can it be?
The child I bore now bears my destiny?
Is this my Saviour in the straw?”
So how to tell? This helpless babe is God Emmanuel,
So insignificant and small,
Could it be at all?
